LATIN AMERICA WRAP: Slab export prices continue to rise in December

Slab export prices in Latin America increased by $20 per tonne through December, as the values of semi-finished steel products continue to be affected by higher costs for coking coal.

Metal Bulletin’s weekly price assessment for Latin America-origin slab exports was $420-430 per tonne fob on December 23, stable on a weekly basis. On December 2, the assessment was $400-410 per tonne fob.
Prices continued rising this month, but at a slower pace than in November, when prices surged by as much as $60 per tonne.
This growth slowdown was due to buyer resistance to higher prices encountered by Brazilian slab producers, mainly among customers in Asia.
