FOCUS: Philippines' nickel mine shutdowns backed by Duterte; Surigao earthquake has no impact on ore supply

Nickel mine closures and suspensions in the Philippines will not be blocked by president Rodrigo Duterte, who voiced his support for the shutdowns on Sunday February 12 during a visit to earthquake victims in Surigao City.

"If [Gina] Lopez [the Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)] says that the mines should be closed, then I can do nothing about it," President Duterte was quoted by local media as saying during his visit to earthquake-hit Surigao City in the province of Surigao del Norte.
