SE Asia steel billet market grappling with slow trading activity

The Southeast Asian billet import market has continued to face slow trading activity over the past week, with most buyers rejecting the high offer prices currently available, sources told Metal Bulletin.

A limited number of deals were heard in the Philippines and Indonesia, while in Thailand importers were mostly silent apart from low-priced Iranian billet cargoes amid a weak domestic market for rebar.
Metal Bulletin’s billet import price assessment for Southeast Asia was $445-460 per tonne cfr for the week ending Monday March 21, up $5 per tonne from $440-455 per tonne cfr in the preceding week.

Following the short revival in bookings of China-origin billet in the Philippines two weeks ago, at $453-455 per tonne cfr, most offers from the Asian nation were back up to prices no Filipino customers were prepared to accept – $470-480 per tonne...
