Tensions heighten between NIF and union

No future meetings have been scheduled between union workers on strike at Noranda Income Fund (NIF) and company management, with tensions heightening as both sides stick to their positions.

Members of the United Steelworkers Local 6486 initiated a strike at NIF’s zinc-processing facility - operated by Canadian Electrolytic Zinc Ltd (CEZ) - in the Canadian province of Quebec, on February 12 over negotiations regarding workers’ pension plans.
Both sides met with a mediator on March 3, but no agreement was reached.
“As of today, no meetings are scheduled,” USW Local 6486 president Manon Castonguay told Metal Bulletin sister title AMM on Wednesday March 22, adding that it would be the mediator's responsibility to schedule any follow-up meetings.
