Algeria increases billet imports with rebar, wire rod quotas still delayed

There has been a notable rise in billet imports into Algeria over the past few month, sources have told Metal Bulletin, referring to the delay in assigning rebar and wire rod import quotas in the country.

The delay was intended to support domestic production of rebar and wire rod in Algeria, they added.
“Domestic long steel output is on the rise now, which makes Algeria a good market for imported billet today,” one trader said.

The commissioning of rolling facilities at the Algerian-Qatari Solb mill is another reason for increased billet imports, sources said. This is scheduled for April 2017 and the mill will be able to produce 2...
