Katanga governor dismissed amid embezzlement allegations

The governor of the Haut Katanga province in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been forced to step down amid a wave of allegations of embezzlement.

Jean-Claude Kazembe was dismissed from his position on Wednesday April 19 by the provincial assembly, which accused him of having redirected $26.7 million of state funds to his own bank accounts, as well as having diverted construction materials intended for municipal projects to his own building company.
