Asian slab buyers caught between high offers, plunging Chinese flat steel prices

The Asian slab import market has continued to show limited activity over the past couple of weeks, as prices for the semi-finished product have yet to drop fully in line with cheaper flat steel from China.

Metal Bulletin’s assessment of slab import prices in Southeast Asia and East Asia was $425-435 per tonne cfr for the week ended Monday April 17, widening downward by $5 per tonne from $430-435 per tonne cfr in the previous two weeks. Prices were $5 per tonne lower than the $430-440 per tonne cfr assessment at the end of March. Only one import transaction was heard in Southeast Asia this week, at around $425-430 per tonne cfr, for 20,000 tonnes of June-shipment slab from India, market participants told Metal Bulletin. A bigger slab cargo from Iran was heard sold at a price around $425 per tonne cfr Thailand, but for May shipment.
