Asian slab buyers expecting $400 cfr amid pressure from Chinese flat steel

Import prices for slab have been dropping in Asia over the past two weeks as suppliers lowered their offers amid persisting pressure from cheap Chinese flat steel products in the region.

Falling prices for iron ore and coking coal have been also contributing to the softening of the slab market, several market participants said.
Metal Bulletin’s assessment of slab import prices in Southeast Asia and East Asia was $410-420 per tonne cfr for the week ended Monday May 8, widening downward by $5 per tonne from $415-420 per tonne cfr in the preceding week.
