Long steel exporting countries 'under pressure' as demand fades in key markets, Irepas says

The supply-demand balance in the global long steel products market has been worsening over the past few weeks, according to the international rebar exporters association, Irepas.

Protective trade measures, coupled with growing capacities in some traditional import markets, have put export-dependent Mediterranean countries “in a difficult situation”, the association said on Tuesday June 6.
Algeria, for example, has been a key market for finished long steel products from Southern Europe, importing 2.60 million tonnes in 2016, but it has not yet announced import quotas or issued import licences for 2017.
