British Steel said to be ‘interested’ in acquiring troubled Aferpi mill in Italy

UK long products steelmaker British Steel has registered an “official interest” in acquiring troubled Italian steelmaker Acciaierie e Ferriere di Piombino (Aferpi), according to Italian media reports.

“We are always looking for opportunities that complement our businesses, however we cannot comment on any individual cases,” a British Steel spokesman told Metal Bulletin on Thursday June 15.
British Steel is aiming to increase its presence in Europe, despite uncertainty over the UK’s trade relationship with the EU, executive chairman Roland Junck said on June 1.
The company has opened an 80,000-tpy rail distribution centre in Lecco, northern Italy, it said on March 31.
