Restart of shuttered Philippine nickel mining ops could pressure laterite ore prices lower

The resumption of nickel mine production in the Philippines could pressure falling laterite ore prices lower still if the country’s new mining minister reverses the closures and suspensions ordered by his predecessor.

Newly appointed secretary of the Philippine Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (DENR) Roy Cimatu aims to complete by the end of next month a review of several controversial decisions made by former DENR secretary Regina Lopez.
Cimatu’s review will cover decisions made by Lopez during her ten months as head of the agency, including the controversial closing/suspension of mining operations as well as the cancellation of government contracts with miners.
