BASF enters talks with Norilsk for raw material supply

Chemicals giant BASF has entered into exclusive talks with Russian nickel and cobalt producer Norilsk for the supply of raw materials for lithium ion batteries.

“The strategic cooperation will leverage both companies’ market positions and expertise to provide an optimised and secure supply chain for electric vehicle battery cell producers in Europe,” BASF said.
As well as nickel, Norilsk produces cobalt in the form of cathode and sulphate, and both metals are critical to the widely used NMC chemistry for lithium ion batteries.
