ALUMINA INDEX: Spot prices slip after Chinese smelter rumours hamper sentiment

Benchmark spot alumina prices fell slightly this week, with buyers in China drawing bearishness from cuts to illegal aluminium capacity, while the Pacific market remained fairly well supplied.

Metal Bulletin’s fob Australia alumina index was calculated at $307.75 per tonne on Thursday July 13, a fall of $1.95 week-on week.  Chinese resellers have alumina to offer because seaborne prices are no longer appealing against prices in the domestic market, while local supplies are comfortable, especially if smelter output is cut.
