Global Ferronickel's Ipilan Nickel operations face uncertainty as DENR files criminal charge

The operations of Ipilan Nickel Corp (INC), an affiliate of the Philippines’ Global Ferronickel Holdings (GFH), face uncertainty as the country’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has filed a criminal complaint against the former alleging illegal tree felling, while building other cases against it.

The DENR filed a criminal complaint against INC at the Office of the Provincial Prosecutor of Palawan on Friday July 14 for felling some 677 trees in an area not covered by the company’s tree-cutting permit, which is in violation of the Forestry Code of the Philippines, the DENR said on July 17. The case involves a 1.7-hectare area out of the total 24-hectare forest cleared by INC in Barangay Maasin, Brooke’s Point in the Philippine province of Palawan which is outside of the company’s permitted tree-felling area, though INC has insisted that its permit covers the area in which the trees were cut down, the DENR said.
