Cif China nickel briquette premiums rise on duty-free imports, battery demand

Premiums for nickel briquettes cif China have followed the recent upsurge in nickel full plate premiums, driven by a free trade agreement between Australia and China as well as stronger briquettes demand from the battery sector.

Deals for Australian nickel briquettes cif China were reported at $130-160 per tonne to Metal Bulletin on Tuesday October 17, much higher than deals at around $80-100 per tonne at beginning of this year and $0-30 per tonne two years ago.
“Nickel briquettes cif China premiums have gone up [in the footsteps of] nickel full plates, with nickel full plates hitting historic highs several times in this year,” a major nickel trader based in Shanghai said. “Nickel briquettes premiums cif China will also climb higher.”
