Rise in imports to remain threat to EU steel sector into 2018, Eurofer says

Steel demand in the EU is expected to continue its recovery in 2017-18 but the growing volumes of imports will remain a critical issue for the sector, European steel association Eurofer said on Wednesday October 25.

EU apparent steel consumption is forecast to go up by 2.30% year-on-year to 160 million tonnes in the full year of 2017. And steel demand is expected to continue its gradual recovery in 2018, to go up by 1.7% year-on-year to 163 million tonnes.

Steel consumption in the EU actually fell by 0.80% year-on-year in the second quarter of this year due to higher de-stocking activity.
