High electrode prices will raise EU stainless steel production costs in 2018, Outokumpu says

The increased prices for high-graphite electrodes will lead to a “clear cost increase” for European stainless steel mills in 2018, amid continued supply tightness, Outokumpu ceo Roeland Baan said on Thursday October 26.

“It is obvious that there is a shortage of electrode material, due to tight supply of needle coke and high demand in Asia. So spot prices have been driven up to levels of $25,000-26,000 per tonne from a previous level of around $3,000 per tonne,” Baan said in a conference call regarding Outokumpu’s third-quarter financial results.
