Alumina prices slide with ratios hard for smelters to swallow

Benchmark fob Australia alumina prices continued to drop this week with smelters leaving their lower bids on the table in an effort to protect their margins.

Metal Bulletin’s daily fob Australia alumina index was calculated at $419 per tonne on Thursday December 7, a decline of 5.4% week on week.
The largest daily decline was seen on December 6, as a cargo of Australian alumina traded at $419 per tonne, taking the index down to $419 on Wednesday from $442.89 per tonne the day before.
Relative weakness in aluminium prices is to blame for the raw material price declines, sources said.
