FORECAST: Aluminium prices could soften in 2018 - Moody’s

Aluminium prices could potentially run into some downside next year, thanks in part to Chinese capacity cuts not living up to the market’s standards along with other factors.

Current aluminium prices have some level of support due to low metal inventories but “further upward price moves will be limited with [a] chance for some 2018 softening,” Moody’s Investors Service Inc said on Tuesday December 12. “Should capacity rationalization in China occur and hold, prices would find stronger support,” it said, adding that these capacity cuts “could increase volatility in the near term amid uncertainty of [a] spring ramp-up.” Moody’s expects 2018 to be generally stable for the base metals...
