Swiss trading house Sider Alloys is expected to complete the purchase of Alcoa’s mothballed Portovesme aluminium smelter in Italy, Metal Bulletin understands.
Rio Tinto is looking to ramp up mined copper production next year after being forced to cut its 2017 production guidance twice due to strikes and falling grades.
Premiums for the supply of aluminium to main Japanese ports (MJP) for the first quarter of 2018 have risen by 9% quarter on quarter to settle at $103 per tonne, according to deals reported to Metal Bulletin. 
China’s aluminium production fell for the fifth consecutive month in November, according to data published by the country’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Thursday December 14. 

A three-week strike at Southern Peru Copper Corp (SPCC) has had no material impact on the miner’s copper production, industry sources familiar with the matter said....
