LIVE FUTURES REPORT 29/12: LME nickel rallies 3%; base metals close 2017 on strong footing

Base metals prices on the London Metal Exchange were on divergent paths on the last trading day of the year, Friday December 29, with nickel stealing the show.

The three-month nickel price rallied 3% at the close today to finish trading above $12,760 per tonne, which summed up nickel's rollercoaster of a year. “Once again, it was nickel that showed itself particularly prone to fluctuation [in 2017], during the course of the year, it varied between $8,700 and $13,000 per tonne,” Commerzbank said in a research note. “Nickel even surged by just shy of 9% in the space of one day,” the bank added.
