Asia aluminium market wary of Chinese ‘fake coils’

Market participants in Asia are becoming increasingly concerned about possible supply pressures amid talks of more “fake” aluminium coils being exported out of China and sold in the region as substitutes for P1020 aluminium ingots.

Such coils are produced by crudely processing ingots into coils which are then exported as aluminium coils for remelt, traders said. Some have also called such products “fake semis."  In December, Chinese unwrought aluminium and aluminium product exports rose 15.8% month on month and 12.8% year on year to 440,000 tonnes.
