ABI customers said covered by European aluminium smelters

Customers who were getting their primary aluminium from the Aluminerie de Bécancour Inc (ABI) smelter in the Canadian province of Quebec are being covered by shipments from European smelters to Canada, American Metal Market has learned.

Rio Tinto plc is covering any potential shortfall in product stemming from last week’s lockout at ABI by sending material to Canada from overseas destinations, a source familiar with the matter told American Metal Market on Monday January 15. The shortfall is not being covered by more production from Rio Tinto’s Kitimat smelter, the source said. Rio Tinto operates two smelters in Europe - one in Dunkerque, France, and another in Hafnarjordur, Iceland....
