Chinese refined zinc output dips 0.7% in 2017; lead production up

China, the world’s largest zinc producing country, produced 6.22 million tonnes of refined zinc in 2017, representing a decrease of 0.7% from the prior year, according to data published by the country’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday January 22.

“Maintenance activity during spring (March-May) and a shortage of zinc concentrates are believed to be the main reasons behind the decline,” a Shanghai-based zinc trader told Metal Bulletin.
China’s largest zinc smelters underwent joint maintenance procedures in March last year, which had affected 540,000 tonnes of annualized capacity at the time.
