Aluminium’s auto sheet growth in US said balanced

US aluminium producers’ capacity for automotive sheet output is growing in line with forecasts, suggesting that demand from automakers is as strong as market participants had hoped.

Announcements of new capacity coming online – Novelis Inc this week unveiled its plans to invest $300 million into a greenfield automotive rolling mill in Guthrie, in the US state of Kentucky – do not indicate that this segment is going into a higher gear than anticipated, sources said. Still, this market is not slowing down anytime soon, either.
“Car companies and material suppliers are doing a great job keeping capacity aligned with demand,” Doug Richman, technical committee chairman for the Aluminum Transportation Group (ATG) and former vice president of engineering and technology for Kaiser Aluminum Corp, told American Metal Market on Wednesday January 24.
