Rusal’s primary aluminium output flat in 2017, VAP sales volume jumps 11%

Rusal’s primary aluminium production grew a slight 0.6% year on year to 3.71 million tonnes in 2017, according to the Russian producer’s quarterly report released on Monday February 5.

During the year, aluminium sales volume rose by 3.6% on an annual basis to 3.96 million tonnes due to an increase in third party aluminium product sales, the company said.
Rusal is one of the major aluminium producers - along with Rio Tinto, Alcoa and South32 - involved in negotiating quarterly aluminium supply to main Japanese ports (MJP).
The first-quarter 2018 MJP aluminium premium settled at $103 per tonne in December last year, up by 9% quarter on quarter, amid positive sentiment in the market.
Global aluminium demand grew by 6% on an annual basis to 64 million tonnes in 2017 on strong demand across all geographical regions, according to Rusal’s preliminary estimates. The robust demand growth left the global aluminium market balance in a deficit of around 1 million tonnes in 2017, the company said.
