MINING INDABA 2018: South Africa’s mining industry must strike sustainable balance - Mathe

The South African mining sector must strive to build a competitive, transformed and sustainable industry, the chairperson of the Council for Geoscience said at Mining Indaba in Cape Town this week.

“While there may be tough choices and tradeoffs to be made, the South African mining industry must continue to thrive and to balance sustainability, competitiveness and transformation,” Dr Humphrey Mathe told delegates during a keynote session at the mining investment conference.

Mathe, speaking on behalf of South Africa’s minister of mineral resources Mosebenzi Zwane who was unable to attend, insisted that the health of the country’s mining sector depends on the ability to resist pursuit of one or another of these factors in isolation, rather working to balance all three.
