Century executive outlines possible Hawesville smelter restart

Century Aluminum’s top executive went into previously undisclosed detail on the company’s plans to restart production at its smelter in Hawesville, in the US state of Kentucky - with the linchpin being President Donald Trump choosing to enact certain Section 232 trade remedies.

Century president and chief executive officer Michael Bless outlined how the producer would bring back previously curtailed capacity at the smelter, speaking during a conference call for the company’s fourth-quarter and full-year 2017 earnings on February 22, and building on a sentiment Bless first expressed during the company’s last call.
Hawesville could have one of its three curtailed potlines back online by as early as the end of March, Bless said, with the line ramped back up to full production capacity by the end of the third quarter this year.

A potline returning to full production would add approximately 50,000 tonnes to the production output of the plant, which slowed down to producing at 40% of its 244,000 tonne-per-year...
