Hydro ordered to halt bauxite residue disposal at Alunorte; alumina output at 50%

A Brazilian regional court has ordered Hydro to halt the operation of its DRS2 bauxite residue disposal at the Alunorte alumina refinery in Brazil’s northern state of Pará, the company announced on Thursday March 1.

The court requested that Hydro keep operations suspended until the integrity of the DRS2 unit has been fully verified and a new operational license has been issued. Alunorte currently has an installation license covering the construction and commissioning of the DRS2. The order comes amid concerns that extreme rainfall during a storm had led to leakages from Alunorte into a nearby river and caused contamination. No proof of leakage has been found, according to Hydro.
