Vale underlines cost, productivity benefits of high-grade iron ore

Vale has underlined the cost and productivity benefits of using high-grade iron ore, with Chinese supply-side reforms accelerating structural changes in consumption patterns for the steelmaking raw material.

“Lower cost and higher productivity brought about by using high-grade iron ore have also widened the price differentials between grades,” Rogerio Nogueira, the Brazilian miner’s iron ore and coal marketing director, said at the Singapore Exchange’s (SGX) Iron Ore Forum last week.
Market participants recently flagged a need for a high-grade iron ore derivative amid widening grade differentials.
Nogueira said last week that Vale was expecting its Brazilian Blend fines product to account for a higher proportion of its overall sales in 2018 compared with last year.
