Southeast Asia’s billet, slab prices largely steady on tepid demand

Import prices for steel billet in Southeast Asia dipped slightly over the past week while those for slab in the wider region including East Asia were unchanged amid sluggish trading in both segments of the market.

Metal Bulletin’s assessment of import prices for billet in Southeast Asia was $540-550 per tonne cfr for the week ended Monday July 2, widening downward by $5 per tonne from a week earlier.
Deals involving billet from Vietnam and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) were concluded at $545 per tonne cfr to the Philippines, sources said.
CIS materials were also heard booked at around $540 per tonne cfr to Thailand.
Several traders in Asia said that the transaction price for Thailand was considered rather high, especially with most Thai buyers indicating their interest closer to $530 per tonne cfr.
