Alunorte full restart date still ‘uncertain’; Hydro Q2 earnings drop vs last year

The timetable for a return to normal operations at Norsk Hydro’s Alunorte alumina refinery in Brazil remains “uncertain,” chief executive officer Svein Richard Brandtzæg said.

Late in February, the Brazilian government ordered Alunorte to operate at half of its capacity because of concerns that severe rainfall in Brazil’s northern state of Pará had caused water contamination from the refinery - allegations that Hydro has denied.

“We are continuing our dialogue with Brazilian authorities, aiming to resume normal operation at Alunorte as soon as possible,” Brandtzæg said at Hydro’s second-quarter results...
