Turkey's flat steel imports down 14.12% in June

Turkey imported 581,315 tonnes of flat steel in June 2018, down 14.12% from 676,906 tonnes in June 2017, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), on cheaper domestic prices.

Demand for flat steel is weak in the country’s domestic market, so import figures should not increase in the coming months.
In addition, the import prices are not competitive compared to local prices.
Metal Bulletin’s weekly price assessment for Turkish domestic hot-rolled coil (HRC) was $625-630 per tonne ex-works on July 27, rising from $610-615 per tonne ex-works on July 20.
Metal Bulletin’s weekly price assessment for Turkish HRC imports was unchanged at $585-590 per tonne cfr on July 27.
Turkey has a 9% import duty on HRC, so the final cost of importing HRC is more than $638-643 per tonne.
Buyers have not accepted higher offers for August-rolled products from Russian suppliers, sources in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) said.
