BHP settles $50m US class action complaint over Samarco dam failure

BHP has settled a class action complaint in the United States in relation to the Samarco dam failure in Brazil that took place in 2015, the miner said on Thursday August 9.

Samarco, a 50:50 joint venture between Vale and BHP with the capacity to produce pellets at a rate of 30.50 million tonnes per year, stopped operations in November 2015 after the collapse of its Fundão tailings dam in Brazil’s south-eastern Minas Gerais state.
