NEWSBREAK: Escondida strike off; negotiations to resume [UPDATE]

The main union at Escondida copper mine has delayed a strike scheduled to begin on Tuesday August 14 and agreed to extend talks with mine owner BHP.

Some 1,955 union members voted on August 1 to strike; 370 voted to accept the latest contract offer from Minera Escondida, which is majority-owned and operated by BHP, Union No 1 said. The sides are divided on benefits and bonus size, the union said. The union is seeking a $43,000 bonus...
