Decision on Sterlite’s Tuticorin copper smelter expected late September

An “independent body” will decide in six weeks’ time whether to close Sterlite’s Tuticorin copper smelter in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, according to local media reports on Monday August 20.

Indian national newspaper the Hindu Times cited a statement from the country’s National Green Tribunal, India’s environmental safeguarding body, which said that the independent body may visit the plant to collect technical data before it submits suggestions for further action.
