Turkish flat steel exports more than double in September despite weak lira, US tariffs

Turkey’s flat steel exports more than doubled year on year in September, up by 103.67%, with total exports in the year to the end of September up by morre than a quarter (27.88%), according to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK).

The increase in exports in September was due to the strong demand especially from Europe, market participants although the amount available for exports was boosted by weak domestic demand, the institute said.
Turkish steel producers expect the country’s export volumes to increase over the next few months because the weakness of the Turkish lira means they will be offered at competitive prices, the Turkish Steel Producers Association (TCUD) said in September.

Fastmarkets’ average price for hot-rolled coil in the Turkish domestic market was $575.625 per tonne ex-works in September 2018, while the export price for Turkish HRC averaged $571.25 per tonne fob in the same month.
