Antofagasta to boost copper capacity by 70,000 tpy via $1.3bln Los Pelambres expansion

Antofagasta aims to increase copper capacity by 70,000 tonnes per year of via a rebuild of its Los Pelambres mine in Chile at a cost of $1.3 billion, the Chilean copper producer said.

After reconstruction ends in 2021, copper production over a 15-year period at Los Pelambres is set to rise from 40,000 tonnes in the first year to 70,000 tonnes per year ultimately.
The works include building a desalination plant and water pipeline for $500 million; extra environmental and regulatory approvals may be required.
