Pig iron demand grows in Turkey on higher EAF-steel output, lower scrap quality

Pig iron demand has improved in Turkey due to higher volumes of steel being produced using electric-arc furnaces (EAFs), while scrap quality and quantity has reduced, sources told Fastmarkets on December 6.

Turkey imported almost a million tonnes of pig iron in the first nine months of 2018, according to the latest available data from the International Steel Statistics Bureau (ISSB). This was rapid growth of 42% compared with the same period last year, when pig iron imports were at 704,258 tonnes.
The largest import supplier was Russia, which shipped 598,953 tonnes of pig iron to Turkey in January-September, or 61% of total import flows.
Russia increased its pig iron shipments to Turkey by 31% year on year, which was partially related to Donetsk Iron & Steel Works’ (DMZ) - a Ukrainian asset that was seized by pro-Russia rebels in March 2017 - pig iron imports into Turkey, one source said.
After the asset came under the rebels’ control, its pig iron was heard to be shipped for export through the Russian Novorossiysk port.
