MEIS 2018: China steel industry's growing need for metspar could limit supplies for rest of world

Strong growth in Chinese steel production and falling domestic supplies of metallurgical-grade fluorspar (metspar) mean China is likely to end 2018 as a net importer, with a knock-on effect on global supplies of the key fluxing agent for steelmaking.

This shift has come about because Chinese demand for fluorspar is increasing - the result of continued growth in domestic steel production - at the same time that the country’s fluorspar output is falling, despite China being the world's leading producer of fluorspar.
