Brazilian flat steel imports drop, long steel imports up in 2018

The volumes of Brazil’s flat and long steel imports followed opposing trends in 2018, according to figures released this week by the country’s foreign trade ministry, MDIC.

Imports of flat steel products into the country fell by 2.90% year-on-year in 2018, to 1.27 million tonnes, from 1.31 million tonnes. The country imported lower amounts of hot-rolled coil and cold-rolled coil (HRC, CRC) last year, partly compensated by increased inbound shipments of hot-dipped galvanized coil (HDG) and plate.
