Water level alert at second Vale tailings dam downgraded

The alert at one of the tailings dams at Vale's Córrego do Feijão iron ore mine where an alarm was triggered by rising water levels on Sunday January 27 - two days after another had suffered a breach - has been downgraded.

Dam VI had been inspected shortly after the breach of Dam I last Friday that resulted in casualties and damage to plant facilities, the loading terminal, maintenance workshops and administrative buildings at the mine, located in Brumadinho in Brazil’s southeastern state of Minas Gerais. The structure of Dam VI, which contains 843,800 cubic meters of tailings, was verified to be within safety parameters, “even after the impact of the tailings,” the miner said on Sunday.
