The measures will take effect tomorrow, on February 2, and will replace the provisional measures that have been in place since July 2018.
The measures concern 26 steel product categories and consist of tariff-rate quotas, with any imports that exceed the quota becoming subject to duty at 25%.
The measures will be in place for a period of three years. This will be calculated to include the period of the provisional measures, which means that the definitive measures will expire on June 30, 2021.
The tariff-rate quotas will be applied over three time periods. The first will be from February 2, 2019, to June 30, 2019; the second will cover July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2020; and a third will be July 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021.
The definitive measures are in line with the proposal sent by the EC to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in early January.
