Ferro-titanium prices were not affected noticeably in the mid-week assessments, but sources suggested that the stoppage was likely to further tighten supply in an already strong complex.
“I can confirm that there has been an explosion on the furnace at the weekend,” a Metraco spokesman told Fastmarkets on Wednesday April 17.
“Where the material damage initially seemed minor, we are now finding out that the electric wiring and the roof of the furnace building might have been more seriously damaged than we first thought,” he added.
“We are not producing at the moment and are in the process of assessing the situation, but it is too early to give a time when production can be resumed at a normal level,” he said.
Metraco is working through stocks and no deliveries have been suspended as a result of the fire for now.
