EUROPEAN STEEL DAY 2019: EC ‘must impose equal carbon cost burden’ on steel imports and EU producers

The European Commission (EC) must impose a similar carbon-emissions cost on imported steel to the carbon cost it currently imposes on domestic EU steelmakers, European steelmakers said at the European Steel association’s (Eurofer) European Steel Day in Brussels on Wednesday June 26.

“Steel products sold on the EU market, whether produced in the EU or imported from third countries, need to have a similar carbon-cost burden or constraint,” Heinz Jörg Fuhrmann, chief executive officer of Austrian steelmaker Salzgitter, said.
“Such World Trade Organization-compliant measures need to be developed as quickly as possible,” he added during a press conference at the event.
The EC is considering setting “eco-duties” on imported steel to level the production costs between imported and domestically produced material, market sources told Fastmarkets on June 20.
