Daye to build new 400k-tpy Huangshi copper smelter; low TCs fail to slow China expansion

The record-low copper concentrates treatment charges (TCs) have failed to put a brake on ambitious expansion plans for copper smelters in China, which is already home to half of the world’s copper smelting capacity.

Daye Nonferrous, one of China’s largest copper smelters, has recently decided to go ahead with construction of a new 400,000 tonne-per-year smelter, Fastmarkets learned.
The large-scale facility, which will deploy ‘double flash’ smelting technology, will be constructed by the end of 2020, a source with direct knowledge of the matter said.
The smelter is expected to commence in the first half of 2021, at the earliest, and will be located in Huangshi city of Hubei province, the source added.

The Daye construction will be the latest copper smelting addition following the debut of Chinalco’s Ningde 400,000-tpy smelter and 400,000-tpy Chifeng smelter and Guangxi's Nanguo 300,000-tpy facility, which all...
