Xinfa Group closes 500kt of Al output due to electric transformer incident – sources

Xinjiang Xinfa Aluminium, a subsidiary of Xinfa Group, was heard to have closed 500,000 tonnes of aluminium production operational lines at its plant in Xinjiang province, China due to an incident at its electrical transformer on August 18, sources told Fastmarkets on Monday August 19.

The total closure period is said to last at least three months while other sources have heard that the production will not return until the end of this year.
“Everyone in the market is talking about this accident and capacity cut and [if you check] the aluminium price today, you will see the response to this news,” an alumina trader in northern China said.

An employee source from Xinfa Group confirmed the aluminium production cut to Fastmarkets on August 19, saying the cut was due to an accident and that it may last half a year...
