South America flat steel import prices under pressure despite Chinese upturn

Import prices in South America for flat steel products moved in different directions during the first week of September, with galvanized coils showing the strongest effects from the recent Chinese upturn, while most other prices were down or steady compared with the previous assessments.

Demand remained weak especially in Brazil, but more activity was reported in Peru, Chile and Colombia. Fastmarkets’ assessment of the price for steel hot-rolled coil, import, cfr main ports South America, was $505-515 per tonne on September 6, unchanged from a week before. While market participants confirmed deals for Pacific-coast delivery within the $505-510 per tonne range, offers to South America would most likely be presented at $515-520 per tonne in the immediate future, they said.
