US structural tubing prices steady; buyers slow to stock up

Prices in the United States for domestically produced structural tubing were unchanged this past week, with distributors focusing their buys on immediate customer needs rather than accumulating inventory.

Some market participants said prices for hollow structural sections (HSS) were on the verge of declining, before the end of September, in reaction to hot-rolled coil prices drifting to their lowest point in about nine weeks.  Service center purchase orders "are in a weak and diminished state" and tube mills are "trying to do what they can to hold on" to the previous price range, one distributor in the Southern US said.  Fastmarkets' weekly price assessment for steel...
