Chinese export plate prices gain ahead of Lunar New Year holiday

China’s export plate prices gained last week as mills raised their offers amid a stronger US dollar, but the market has been quiet this week ahead of the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday.

Fastmarkets’ price assessment for March/April shipments of steel heavy plate export, fob China main port was $490-500 per tonne for the week ended Tuesday January 21, up $10-15 from $480-485 per tonne fob the week prior.
A Shanghai-based trader said early last week $490-495 per tonne fob was possible to reach, with mills such as Liaoning-based Minmetals Yingkou Medium Plate Co offering such a level.
